Since graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois in 1986, Dr. Robin has been blazing her own trail within veterinary medicine, providing state of the art and state of the heart medical care. She brought companion animal medicine into the homes of pet lovers in Wyoming from 1986-1991 through House calls Unlimited Mobile Veterinary Practice.

In 1991, she purchased Windsor Veterinary Clinic and turned it into a Practice of Excellence, an Idexx Model Clinic, and a 4-year accredited American Animal Hospital Association hospital. She passionately shares her vision for the bright future of veterinary medicine and the Family-Pet Bond through her daily work, her writing, and speaking nationally and internationally at veterinary meetings. She served as a Trustee for the Morris Animal Foundation for 15 years.  She is an affiliate faculty member at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Her degree in English from Loyola University of Chicago is put to good use weekly in her column in the Thursday issue of The Denver Post, magazine articles, short stories, and her book, Pets Living with Cancer: A Pet Owner’s Resource.

In 2001, Dr. Robin was presented the prestigious Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare Award by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

For fun, Dr. Robin enjoys fiddling, playing the guitar, singing, writing and reading.

Dr. Robin’s Accomplishments

In June 2016, Dr. Robin graduated with her MS in Clinical Bioethics from the program co-sponsored by Union Graduate College and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Manhattan, NYC.  She is the first veterinarian to graduate from this program in the Clinical Bioethics track, and will now expand her educational offerings to include bioethical discussions of challenging clinical cases.
In January 2015, Dr. Robin achieved Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, the newest specialty college in veterinary medicine.  There are fewer than 200 Diplomates in the ACVSMR.
Dr. Robin was the third veterinarian in the world to credential as a Diplomate in the American Academy of Pain Management, a human pain management organization.  She is also credentialed in animal chiropractic care, canine medical massage, and medical acupuncture for animals.  She was a founder of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (www.ivapm.org) and served as that organization’s second President.  Dr. Robin is recognized as an international leader in the arena of animal pain management and teaches at conferences around the world, as well as hosting veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and post-graduate veterinarians and veterinary technicians at Master-class learning experiences in Windsor.

2000 Hill’s Animal Welfare and Humane Ethics Award presented by the American Animal Hospital Association in recognition of contributions to and advancements of animal welfare through extraordinary service to further humane principles, education, and understanding

1999 Working Women Entrepreneurial Excellence Award in Innovation presented by Working Woman magazine to celebrate the accomplishments of women business owners

1996 Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year presented by the Association of Women Veterinarians for professional excellence and achievement in the field of veterinary medicine

1995 Up and Coming Veterinarian of the Year presented by Colorado Veterinary Medical Association for her contributions to veterinary medicine and for her community service and research

The Ethics of Veterinary Practice  This interview of Dr. Downing, found in the September 2013 issue of Today’s Veterinary News, where she discusses her philosophies and goals as a pioneer in the areas of clinical bioethics and pain management in the field of veterinary medicine.

Vital Assesments for the Vitality of Our Dogs is a podcast produced by Canine Health Foundation in March 2013 where Dr. Downing discusses the importance of wellness exams for dogs, including the fourth and fifth vital assessments, which are pain and diet.

Doing the Right Thing for Animals is an interview of Dr. Downing found in the Profiles in Medicine section of April 2011 issue of Veterinary Practice News, where she talks about an inspitation case that led her on her current path.
